μ' αυτοκρατορικήν εξάρτυση πρωινού

θριάμβου, με πουλιά, με το φως τ' ουρανού

και με τον ήλιον όπου θα τα διαπεράσει.

Ας υποθέσουμε πως είμαστε εκειπέρα,

σε χώρες άγνωστες της Δύσης, του Βορρά,

ενώ πετούμε το παλτό μας στον αέρα,

οι ξένοι μας βλέπουνε περίεργα, σοβαρά.

Για να μας δεχτεί κάποια λαίδη τρυφερά,

έδιωξε τους υπηρέτες της ολημέρα.

Ας υποθέσουμε πως του καπέλου ο γύρος

άξαφνα εφάρδυνε, μα εστένεψαν, κολλούν

τα παντελόνια μας, και, με του πτερνιτήρος

το πρόσταγμα, χιλιάδες άλογα κινούν.

Πηγαίνουμε -σημαίες στον άνεμο χτυπούν-

ήρωες σταυροφόροι, σωτήρες του Σωτήρος.

Ας υποθέσουμε πως δεν έχουμε φτάσει

από εκατό δρόμους τα όρια της σιγής,

κι ας τραγουδήσουμε, το τραγούδι μας να μοιάσει

νικητήριο σάλπισμα, ξέσπασμα κραυγής-

τους πυρρούς δαίμονες, στα έγκατα της γης,
